I was thinking that since we only need the headers to actually build gcc
I could get a little further by running "make install" using the broken
newlib and then proceeding with the full gcc build.  It installs a fair
number of headers and building gcc gets as far as configuring libiberty
before failing complaining that the C compiler doesn't work.  If you look
at the config.log file it doesn't work several times.  Oh well, it was 
a thin straw at best.
