assembler errors compiling arm-none-elf

Hi there.  

I'm trying to build an arm-none-elf crossgcc and I get assembler errors.

I'm building on an up-to-date Debian Woody box (i386).

First I built binutils-2.11.2:

~/build/binutils$ ../../src/binutils-2.11.2/configure --target=arm-none-elf
--prefix=~/
~/build/binutils$ make all install

No problems thus far, and all the new binaries are in ~/bin.

Then I try to build gcc 2.95.3:

~/build/gcc$ ../../src/gcc-2.95.3/configure --target=arm-none-elf
--prefix=~/
~/build/gcc$ make all install

The make eventually dies (I'm pasting the output at the end of this
message).

I've seen suggestions that this is caused by not having an ARM binutils
installed, but it seems to have built itself without trouble, and the
binaries are definitely in my path.

What am I doing wrong??  Any input greatly apprecated.  Thanks very much in
advance!
