as: unrecognized option -G while, target=mipsel-r3000-elfl

Hi,

I am attempting to build GCC 2.95.2 for host i586-pc-linux-gnu and target
mipsel-r3000-elfl.

I can't seem to get it to work, the build process always stops with the error:
as: unrecognized option -G

I am using GCC 2.95.2 on a redhat system
I have previously built the binutils for the mipsel-r3000-elfl, all
suffixed with -r3000 (eg as-r3000)
which are installed in /usr/local/bin/

I used configure --target=mipsel-r3000-elfl --program-suffix=-r3000
--prefix=/usr/local/gcc-r3000

and then typed

make cross

Thanx for any help

Tom.
