Well, your probably right, if there was a change in the past.
At least older versions accept the -V switch.

Anyway, then there is a problem in gcc, see
http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=41024
The asm spec maps -v to -V.
So, we have to change one side.
