linker option @FILE

Hello!
I found a difference in the supported options of binutils linker "ld" between version 2.16.1 and version 2.16.91.
The 91 version supports the option "@FILE - Read options from FILE" while the other version does not.
I like to use this option from my makefiles, to submit a list of files.
Why is there a difference in this option, and which versions are supporting this (2.16.x and/or 2.17.x)?
