GAS : assembly optimizations ?

Hi all,
I am working on an x86 machine and trying to perform optimizations on
some piece of assembly code. Can anyone tell me, what optimizations
are offered by the GNU assembler, and where can i get the details
about it. I scrolled through the manual but i did not get any
information about it.
I am actually trying to use GAS to perform optimization on a hot code
at run time after converting it into Assembly. Can GAS be useful in
performing optimizations on those chunks of code?
