I tried this using the following (postprocessed) test case:
.lcomm VAR1 100
.lcomm VAR2 2*100
.lcomm VAR3 (1+100)*2
and it worked:
bje@namadgi:~/build/binuitls/gas$ ./as-new ~/foo.S -o foo.o
bje@namadgi:~/build/binuitls/gas$ ./as-new --version
GNU assembler 2.15.94 20041223

This assembler was configured for a target of `i686-pc-linux-gnu'.
Are you sure this applies to i386?
