FWIW, the current binutils failed "make check" on Linux/x86:
./ld/ld.log:FAIL: ar with versioned solib
./ld/ld.log:FAIL: TLS -fpic -shared transitions

FYI, I now see: FAIL: TLS32 dynamic exec FAIL: TLS32 shared but I think it is unrelated (my fix doesn't affect it and I'm pretty sure yesterdays test passed).
