Alan, data.s and assert.s became empty due to

I think we should put something there. Otherwise,
# patch -E ...
will remove them. How about putting an emply line in those files?
Andreas, in the meantime, please do
# cd ld/testsuite/ld-scripts
# touch data.s assert.s
