Err, well, I'd ask Thiemo since he just changed this code to be like
it is, back on 10/1:

To be honest, the change (that one, this one, etc. 8-) requires more
thought than i have time to give it at the moment.  ("This is why I
don't want to be a maintainer of stuff.")
