It works fine for me with gc 2.96.

It is very possible. gcc 2.96 had to be fixed to handle binutils with
64bit bfd. There is even a check to disallow egcs-1.1.2 for 64bit BFD.
Maybe, we should add gcc 2.95.x :-).
