I have read the manual if by the manual you mean "info ld." I 
could not see anything about it - this may be because it is not 
in there - if I'm just blind please let me know or if I read the 
wrong thing.

Have you read the GNU ld manual cover to cover?
I would expect that this would become apparent after doing so.
(At least it was the last time I did so!)
