Are AIX 4.3.3, Binutils 2.10.1, and/or Glibc 2.2.2 compatible?

I've been tearing my hair out trying to determine whether I can or can not use binutils and/or glibc on AIX 4.3.3 (powerpc). I have successfully compiled gcc 2.95.2.1 already and that works okay, but I want to know if my efforts are in vain for binutils/glibc.

I have seen various posts on mailing lists stating (or, usually, implying) that neither works with AIX 4.3.3. Yet, I see these traces of evidence that it might:

1. The presence of ftp://aixpdslib.seas.ucla.edu/pub/binutils/RISC/4.3/exec/binutils.2.10.1.tar.Z , which includes most everything except "ld".

2. Directory sysdeps/unix/sysv/aix/ in the glibc 2.2.2 source.

3. From the binutils 2.9 Changelog: "* ar and ranlib now work on AIX. The tools are now built by default on AIX."

I'm trying to build a GNU-ified-as-much-as-possible environment. Can anyone give me the current status on these two packages, and if you can, the future direction?
